Thirty years ago, John Lennon was murdered

Those of us old enough probably remember being told Lennon was murdered while we were watching a Monday Night Football game.  The late great Howard Cosell made the announcement.

He was murdered by Mark Chapman outside his Manhattan apartment.  Chapman was arrested reading The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger.

No one has ever figured out why Lennon was murdered.  I guess somethings just can't be explained.

I have to admit, while Lennon was a great songwriter and activist, the reference he receives and the yearly reminders of the anniversary of his death are puzzling.  After all, he was just a musician, albeit a good one.  He wasn't Mother Theresa, a Pope, Mahatma Gandhi, Anwar Sadat, a great world leader etc

Perhaps it was the way his murder was announced during a football game that makes us all remember.

RIP John Lennon
