Why is Lonsdale Quay so much nicer than New Westminster Quay?

Count Jr and I made the trek over to Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver today, slummed with the little people on transit downtown and then took the Seabus passenger ferry across Burrard Inlet to the Quay.

Lonsdale Quay is lively, many stores, restaurants and is a destination spot.

New Westminster Quay is being rebuilt but even before, there were few if any quality stores, no one goes there, and really other than the river boardwalk, it is worthless.

Why is that?

There is a transit station near Westminster Quay, many people live in the area now with more and more high rise condos being built nearby, there is a major hotel next to the Quay.  I guess all the Quay needs is to get an anchor tenant in there but then again, why would you want to be an anchor when said anchor might drag you under?

Hopefully with the downtown of New Westminster getting out of the 1930s and new people moving to the city, the old boys' network that still exists in this town might start to dissipate.  Some things in this city never change.  As I heard once, things have been done the same way in this city for 150 years, why change?  Hell I admit even I chuckled at that comment.

Then again what else can you expect from a city that still has May Day where 10 year old girls dress in party dresses and dance with senior citizens not related to them.  In any other city that would be considered creepy, in this city it is considered an untouchable tradition.

One can only hope change is near and Westminster Quay becomes a destination spot like Lonsdale Quay.
