I have to admit I was scared this spring

For the first time in the 31 years I have  lived in Vancouver, I was actually scared the Canucks might win the Stanley Cup.  They ran away with the President's Trophy, survived their normal Waterloo in the Blackhawks (thanks to a brilliant pass from Blackhawk Chris Campoli to the rat Alexandre Burrows in overtime of game 7, (no wonder Gia on The Bachelor and Bachelor Pad dumped his sorry ass) and then had two easy series to make the Finals.

In the Finals, after two games, they looked like a team of destiny after winning game 1 late and then winning game two early in overtime (fortunately Brian Skrudland's 9 second record is still intact).  Then the Vancouver Canucks remembered they were the Vancouver Canucks and lost four of the next five.

After game 2, with people celebrating all around me in Whistler, Contessa said, they will find a way to fuck it up and she was right again.

Oh they teased their fans once more with a 1-0 win in game 5, they were honking horns all over the city, acting like they had won etc.

Then reality hit and they were punked in games 6 and 7 including an embarrassing 4-0 loss in game 7 at home.  Luongo again proved himself a choker.

I was scared I would have to hear all next year during the Hab game "we have a cup frogs", "ancient history man, I only care about the here and now", would have to see the smiling whale all summer.  However, that was not to be.  I get at least one more year of being able to say "win a cup and then I will listen" to colleague and other people in this city when I get ragged about the Canadiens.

I do feel sorry for many of my homeys as they love their team as much as I love mine but in the end, I can sleep peacefully.

Funny though, during the playoffs, all you saw were people in Canuck fan gear but the second game 7 ended, they must have put the gear back into moth balls as it is basically nowhere to be seen now.

The whale is no longer smiling but Habfan (and there are a ton of us in Vancouver) are.

  1. I for one would rather had the Canucks win than the effing Bruins!

  2. That's fair but I suspect you don't live out west.
