I have thought about that question since Gordo quit as Premier.
It is probably just me but I am thinking of the old Monty Python movie "The Holy Grail" and the tail of brave Sir Robin. You see, Sir Robin claimed to be brave and had almost fought many battles, almost slain dragons but usually, as his minstrel sang, beat a very brave retreat when the going got tough. He was also the knight who soiled his armour when the killer rabbit attacked.
What does that have to do with Gordo, you might ask, well he enjoyed being Premier when things were going well and people liked him. Then he brought in the HST which added cost to restaurant bills and many other items. We paid 12% tax on most things before but now the HST captures many of the items not previously covered. In the end, at least yours truly, many of us are paying more consumption tax than before.
People are choked at Gordo because he was against the HST before an election, then brought it in after the election. His popularity dropped faster than every Premier in BC not named Bill VanderZalm. He went on tv to save his Premiership by offering us another income tax cut but within a week, he had quit.
I am sure he saw the writing on the wall, was afraid he would lose the HST referendum even though the odds are stacked against that occurring but then instead of staying and fighting like a warrior, he ran away like Jar Jar Binks. It seems to me it is unfair of him to leave his successor with the Titanic sized icebergotherwise known as the HST. Captain Edward Smith went down with the Titanic after he sailed his ship into an iceberg. Seems to me Gordo should have gone down with the HST.
