RIP Paul the Octopus

A dear friend of mine died yesterday, Paul the prognosticating Octopus died in his aquarium in Germany.  Paul and I developed a close relationship during the World Cup in South Africa because old Paul had a perfect record in predicting Germany's World Cup games.  Since I had Spain in my office pool and they played Germany in the semi-finals, I waited on baited breath for Paul's prediction on that game.  I was in Italy at the time on holiday and tuned into Eurosport to watch the festivities.  When I saw Paul had picked Spain, my heart leapt.

Paul then received death threats from angry Germans but Spaniards wanted to adopt Paul and make him an honourary citizen.

Paul then correctly predicted Spain's ultimate victory in the World Cup final over The Netherlands.

No foul play is suspected in Paul's death although he died very young.

Let's all raise a glass and toast a great Octopus.
